Job Shadowing Report at Staffelsee Gymnasium in Murnau Murnau, 13-17 May 2024
Introduction
In May 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a job shadowing program at Staffelsee Gymnasium in the town of Murnau, Germany, as part of the Erasmus program. The aim of this program was to gain insight into the German educational system, learn about local pedagogical methods, and study the innovative techniques employed by German teachers in their daily teaching activities. Below, I provide a detailed account of what I learned and the experiences I gained during this professional visit.
Educational System and Pedagogical Approaches
During my time at Staffelsee Gymnasium, I had the opportunity to learn about the fundamental structure of the German educational system. The structure and operation of the gymnasium served as an excellent example of how to effectively prepare students for the Abitur and university studies.
- Differentiated Instructions: One of the key elements of the German educational system is differentiated instruction. Teachers teach students at various levels, taking into account their individual abilities and interests. This approach helps ensure that each student progresses at their own pace and according to their own level.
- Project-Based Learning: Staffelsee Gymnasium places great emphasis on project-based learning. Students regularly participate in projects where they explore topics using an interdisciplinary approach. This method not only deepens subject knowledge but also enhances students’ creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork abilities.
Innovative Teaching Methods
At Staffelsee Gymnasium, I observed several innovative teaching methods that contribute to active learning and student engagement.

- Use of Digital Tools: The school widely uses digital tools in almost every lesson, including projectors and tablets. These tools allow teachers to visually illustrate the material and interactively engage students in lessons. The application of digital technology not only aids in more effective material comprehension but also develops students’ digital competencies.
- Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning methods also play a significant role in education. During lessons, students work together in small groups on assignments, developing their social skills and teamwork abilities. Through group work, students also learn from each other, contributing to community building and individual development.
Cultural Sensitivity and International Experiences
The experiences gained during the program were valuable not only from a professional standpoint but also enriched me culturally.
- International Relations: Staffelsee Gymnasium regularly hosts foreign students and teachers from various countries, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and language skill development. Currently, they participate in student exchange programs with four countries. Such programs help students and teachers become more open to other cultures and enhance the school’s international reputation.
- Cultural Programs: The school places great emphasis on cultural programs and events. These events allow students to learn about other countries’ cultures and customs, contributing to the development of cultural sensitivity and global awareness.
Professional Development and Application
The experiences and lessons learned at Staffelsee Gymnasium can be applied in numerous ways to my own work and in the practices of my institution.
- Introducing New Methods: Innovative teaching methods, such as the use of digital tools and cooperative learning, can make lessons more interesting and interactive. I can incorporate these methods into my teaching practice to increase student motivation and learning outcomes.
- Project-Based Learning: Implementing project-based learning provides opportunities for students to delve deeper into topics and gain practical experience. This approach enhances students’ critical thinking and creativity, making learning more engaging and enjoyable.
- Strengthening International Connections: Organizing international connections and exchange programs can help develop our students’ language and cultural skills, as well as enhance our institution’s international reputation. Such programs can help students and teachers view the world from a global perspective.
Defining Expected Learning Outcomes
The expected learning outcomes defined in the planning phase of the mobility were specific, concrete, clear, and measurable. The goal was that by the end of the program, I would:
- Understand the basic structure and operation of the German educational system.
- Master the methods of differentiated instruction and project-based learning.
- Develop my digital competencies and learn how to use digital tools in education.
- Strengthen my international connections and cultural sensitivity.
Evaluating Learning Outcomes
I evaluated the learning outcomes gained during the program in several ways:
- Self-Assessment: Throughout the program, I continuously reflected on my development and what I learned. Self-assessment helped me identify my strengths and areas for improvement.
- Feedback: At Staffelsee Gymnasium, I had the opportunity to conduct a German as a foreign language lesson for Ukrainian students, where the group’s teacher and students provided feedback on my work and performance. This feedback helped me better understand how to apply what I learned to my work.
- Documentation: I kept a detailed journal of observations, lessons, and experiences during the program. This documentation helps me look back on the program later and utilize the learned material in my work.
Conclusion
The experiences gained at Staffelsee Gymnasium in Murnau were extremely valuable both professionally and personally. The knowledge and experiences acquired here not only enhance the effectiveness of my work but also contribute to the development of our institution. The job shadowing program provided an opportunity to learn new methods and approaches that I can successfully apply in my teaching practice in the future.
