Avicenna high school students from grade 10 visited the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library this week. It has been not only a long-cherished goal of the Literature teachers but all of the others to show our teenage students sophisticated learning facilities in the heart of Budapest within an outstanding building, which used to be a Palace (Wenckheim Palace) owned by an aristocrat family in the XIX. century. The library itself started to operate in 1904.
The richly ornamented iron gates from the street made us anticipate the magnificent interior of the mainly baroque building. Having loaded the lockers with our belongings at the Entrance Hall we were guided by two English-speaking tour guides to show the eight floors out of which only one, the seventh floor has kept its original splendour and ornaments lavishly decorated with chandeliers, huge mirror, iron stoves and antique furniture. All the rest of the interior has been reconstructed in a modern style fitting to its function.
In an allocated room on the first floor, students were given brief, thirty-minute information about the use and services of the public library, which is available to anyone who gains a library membership. Among many things, they were also told the ways of registration, how to borrow books and how to use the digital library, the online and audiovisual resources.
After Ms Emese, the class master of grade10 had initiated a conversation with a lot of well-formulated, brainstorming questions, Zina, our only 12 class student here told her mates what had motivated her to become a member of this library a few years before.
Having seen the Children’s Dragon Library on the first floor we were guided to the second floor called Small Gallery, which is a free access area. Above the well-lit and modern Literature and General Reading Rooms on the third and fourth floor, the E-reading room provides internet use and a gallery of sociological periodicals. Between the Budapest Collection on the sixth floor and the Music collection on the eighth floor, the most mesmerizing seventh floor conjured us into a real XIX-century aristocratic atmosphere full of students immersed in reading in the huge rooms which used to be functioning as a ballroom.
This cultural event gave our students an insight not only into the mysterious and diverse world of learning methods but also into the world and life of the aristocracy before the First World War in Hungary.
Látogatás a Fővárosi Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Központi Könyvtárában
Az Avicenna gimnázium 10. osztályos tanulói a héten a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtárban tettek látogatást. Nemcsak az irodalomtanároknak, hanem mindannyiunknak régóta dédelgetett célja volt, hogy tizenéves diákjainknak Budapest szívében, egy olyan kiemelkedő
épületben, amely a XIX. században egy arisztokrata család tulajdona (Wenckheim-palota) volt, igényes tanulási lehetőségeket mutassunk meg. Maga a könyvtár 1904-ben kezdte meg működését.
A gazdagon díszített vaskapuk az utca felől már előrevetítették a nagyrészt barokk épület pompás belső terét. Miután a bejárati csarnokban megraktuk a szekrényeket a holminkkal, két angolul beszélő idegenvezető kalauzolt bennünket, hogy megmutassa a nyolc emeletet,
amelyek közül csak egy, a hetedik emelet őrizte meg eredeti pompáját és díszeit, pazarul díszítettek csillárokkal, hatalmas tükrökkel, vaskályhákkal és antik bútorokkal. A belső tér többi részét a funkciójához illő modern stílusban alakították át.
Az első emeleti különteremben a diákok rövid, harminc perces tájékoztatást kaptak a lakosság számára nyilvános könyvtár használatáról és szolgáltatásairól, amely bárki számára elérhető, aki könyvtári tagságot szerez. Sok más mellett a beiratkozás módjairól, a
önyvkölcsönzésről, valamint a digitális könyvtár, az online és az audiovizuális források használatáról is részletesen tájékoztatták diákjainkat.
Miután Emese tanárnő, a 10. évfolyam osztályfőnöke sok jól megfogalmazott, ötletdús kérdésekkel kezdeményezett beszélgetést, Zina, az egyetlen megjelent 12. osztályos diákunk elmondta társainak, hogy mi motiválta őt arra, hogy néhány évvel ezelőtt tagja legyen ennek a
könyvtárnak.
Miután megnéztük az első emeleti Gyermeksárkánynak nevezett Könyvtárat, átkalauzoltak minket a második emeletre, a Kis Galéria nevű, szabadon látogatható részre. A harmadik és negyedik emeleten található, jól megvilágított és modern irodalmi és általános olvasótermek
felett az E-olvasóterem biztosítja az internethasználatot és a szociológiai folyóiratok galériájának megismerését. A hatodik emeleti Budapest Gyűjtemény és a nyolcadik emeleti Zenei Gyűjtemény között a legmegbabonázóbb hetedik emelet igazi XIX. századi arisztokrata
hangulatot varázsolt elénk, ahol az egykor bálteremként funkcionáló hatalmas termeket olvasásban elmerült diákok töltötték meg.
Ez a kulturális esemény nemcsak a tanulási módszerek titokzatos és sokszínű világába, hanem az első világháború előtti magyarországi arisztokrácia világába és mindennapi életébe is betekintést nyújtott diákjaink számára.
